Research and development for economic sucess

Application-oriented research funding forms the basis of research and technology funding in Austria. It aims to take up innovative ideas and research initiatives in all thematic areas and sectors and to turn them into specific successful projects.

For companies, research institutes and individual researchers and inventors, acquiring third-party funding for economically viable research projects is often an essential prerequisite for developing new products, processes and technologies. With their quick and straight forward funding for research and development projects, the General Programme help to strengthen the competitive power of Austrian businesses and thus also contribute towards preserving employment, wealth creation and prosperity in the country.

Small and medium-sized enterprises, which often have smaller budgets and fewer options for research and development, are often dependent on suitable support for tackling and implementing high-risk research projects. The General Programme are very successful in this segment. Approximately 80 % of the applications are submitted by small and medium enterprises with up to 250 employees. Over 10 % of applications come from young, technology driven start-up companies. However, we also successfully support high-risk research projects from large companies.

Cross-sector funding models

Within the General Programme FFG offers special cross-sector funding models such as Start Up Funding, Feasibility StudiesCompetence Headquarters, Young Experts, Collective Research, Service Innovations, regional funding as well as financing of international projects (f.e. ERA NETs).
