Chips JU Skills Development 2026

Initiatives of the Chips JU to bridge the talent gap in semiconductors

The Chips Joint Undertaking launched several funding calls on skills development at the beginning of July 2026. The aim of these calls is to alleviate the shortage of qualified personnel in the European semiconductor industry. The calls support innovative trainings for students and upskilling for professionals. The Federal Ministry for Innovation, Mobility and Infrastructure plans to contribute 1 million Euro for the national co-financing of Austrian participants in European consortia. The national call is scheduled to open on 30.07.2026.

What can be funded?

Funding is available for the Austrian organizations in transnational projects under the following calls:

  • Chips Joint Undertaking calls:Pilot Federation (Topic: DIGITAL-JU-CHIPS-2026-SKILLS-PF-SG) 
  • Skills Hubs of Excellence (Topic: DIGITAL-JU-CHIPS-2026-SKILLS-HoE-SG)

Funding for the call "Stimulation of Chip Design" (Topic: DIGITAL-JU-CHIPS-2026-SKILLS-SCD-CSA) is provided exclusively by Chips JU.

Who can be funded?

Austrian participants who are listed as partners in the transnational consortium(s), that has(have) been selected for funding from the Chips Joint Undertaking and who are beneficiaries in the respective Simple Grant Agreement(s) are eligible for funding. The following organizations are eligible: 

  • Universities 
  • Universities of Applied Sciences

What is the amount of funding?

A total funding budget of 1 million EUR is available nationally and is distributed as follows among the calls: 

  • "Pilot Federation" (DIGITAL-JU-CHIPS-2026-SKILLS-PF-SG): 400,000 EUR 
  • "Skills Hubs of Excellence" (DIGITAL-JU-CHIPS-2026-SKILLS-HoE-SG): 600,000 EUR

The maximum national funding rate is 50 %.

What are the submission criteria?

Both a transnational and a national submission are required for these calls.

How does the submission work?

National applications must be submitted electronically via the FFG eCall system. Each partner submits their own national application. All submission criteria, required documents, and participation conditions are specified in the document "National Eligibility Criteria," which will be published at the start of the national call.

When will a decision be made?

The result of the formal check will be communicated via eCall message within two weeks after the submission deadline. The final funding decision is expected in December 2026.
