The initiative aims to develop a broad range of solutions for the transformation of our energy system. It focuses on energy innovations from Austria that serve both domestic and export markets while making a substantial contribution to achieving climate neutrality by 2040.
Energy research and innovative technologies for energy generation, conversion, storage and conservation are key components of a modern energy system. The implementation plan for the RTI priority “Energy Transition” places particular emphasis on transforming Austria’s energy and economic systems. Funding projects supported by the FFG generate technological, organisational and societal solutions, thereby accelerating the energy transition. The implementation plan highlights the importance of interdisciplinary collaboration between academia, industry and public institutions.
The sixteen innovation objectives for the funding period 2024 to 2026 range from energy generation and storage technologies to integrated system solutions and the societal and economic transformation.
Austria’s Integrated National Energy and Climate Plan (NECP) for 2021–2030 aims to achieve climate neutrality by 2040 and is aligned with the EU initiatives Fit for 55 and RePowerEU. The plan outlines measures to significantly reduce greenhouse gas emissions, increase energy efficiency and expand renewable energy sources. Key priorities include phasing out fossil fuels, promoting sustainable energy systems and enhancing security of supply, particularly by reducing dependence on gas imports. Innovation, research and cross-sectoral cooperation are essential instruments for driving the transformation required across the commercial and industrial sectors, transport, and all public domains.
