AQT: Quantum technology from the cloud

The Innsbruck-based tech company Alpine Quantum Technologies GmbH (AQT) specializes in the development of ion trap quantum computers. The company celebrated several milestones in 2025.

On the one hand, the trapped ion quantum system of AQT is now available on the Amazon Braket cloud platform, giving companies worldwide easy access to powerful quantum hardware. On the other hand, Europe now has its own cloud-based ion trap quantum computing service, through the completion of the EU-funded and Alpine Quantum Technologies-led “QCDC” (Quantum Computers for Data Centers) project. This gives researchers access to highly sophisticated machines that can perform advanced quantum computing tasks on European devices.

In the future, tasks that are challenging for classical computers or even supercomputers will be made possible by quantum machines like those from Alpine Quantum Technologies. In contrast to conventional computers, which process data in a binary manner – i. e. “0” or “1” – quantum computers use quantum entanglement. That is, the information units can be “0” and “1” at the same time. This allows quantum computers to simulate highly complex systems, processes or materials with unprecedented speed and accuracy.

Both projects represent a significant step towards making quantum computing a practical tool for researchers and companies across Europe. "By giving scientists access to our world-class quantum technology, we are helping to solve problems that were previously beyond the reach of even quantum computers. Whether drug discovery, materials design or sustainability, the potential is enormous and we are excited to see what impact it will have on industry," explains Juris Ulmanis, QCDC project leader and director for Quantum technologies at AQT

In addition to complete systems, Alpine Quantum Technologies also offers individual components and cloud access to its services. The company took its first steps in 2018. At that time, both the University of Innsbruck and the FFG invested a total of 10 million euros in the start-up. The FFG – as an early supporter of quantum technology in Austria – underlined the great potential of this industry with its investment.
