COST participation opportunities

COST European Cooperation in Science & Technology
What are the benefits of participating in COST?

COST offers unique opportunities to advance the individual careers of researchers, establish new contacts and become part of a global network. By promoting thematically open research networks, opportunities arise to exchange knowledge, develop innovative ideas and work together with international experts to find solutions of current challenges. Last but not least, consortia for submissions within the framework of large collaborative projects, such as Horizon Europe, can also be formed here. COST offers tailor-made programs and activities to promote the careers of early-stage researchers in particular.

  1. COST Action as a living network
During the four-year term, the originally initiated networks grow and change. Low-threshold participation in ongoing COST Actions is possible at any time and is open to experts from all over the world. The prerequisite is membership of an institution (in addition to an employment contract, for example, doctoral programs, technical assistantships, or volunteer work at an NGO). Applications to participate, for example as a working group member, can be submitted directly via the eCOST portal. Further information (e.g. regarding participation in training schools or short-term scientific missions) can be found on the website of the respective COST Action.

In addition, individuals from the currently 41 COST member states can be nominated for the Management Committee (MC), the governing body of a COST Action. Each country has two positions available on the Management Committee. Find a COST Action that matches your research background! Nominations to the Management Committee are made by the COST National Coordinator at the FFG. We look forward to receiving your application via eCall

As a Management Committee Member, you will:
    - Develop professionally: Gain valuable experience in project management, mentoring, and international research coordination.
    - Lead and influence: Help shape the Action’s objectives, activities, and funding priorities.
    - Advance your career: Enhance your CV with leadership experience and access to COST resources, training, and publications
    - Institutional Impact: Bring back knowledge, contacts, and opportunities to your home institution.

  2. Submit a new COST Action
Innovative ideas for specific scientific challenges can be submitted on an ongoing basis. Currently, project proposals are collected once a year (in fall) and then evaluated. The next collection date is expected to be in October 2025. Submissions are made via the eCOST portal of the COST Association. We have summarized more detailed information for you under “Open Call”.

  3. Evaluate a COST Action idea
COST project proposals are evaluated in a single-stage process by at least three independent experts. These experts do not necessarily have to belong to an academic institution, but should have comprehensive expertise in their field. The scientific focus is based on the six thematic areas of the OECD (Natural Sciences, Engineering & Technology, Medical & Health Sciences, Agricultural Sciences, Social Sciences, Humanities)

COST also strives for gender balance and a high level of participation by young experts in the selection of evaluators. Interested parties can register at eCOST. An expense allowance is provided.
