Artificial intelligence opens up new possibilities for science, medicine, and societal development. At the same time, its use raises fundamental questions about responsibility, fairness, and equal opportunity.
In the Mission Expert Talk, we will explore these two perspectives: the use of AI in biomedical research and the societal framework for equitable AI system development.
Dr. Georg Winter, Life Science Director at the new research institute for biomedical AI, AITHYRA, Adjunct PI at CeMM, and co-founder of the biotech companies Proxygen and Solgate Therapeutics, provides insights into the role of AI at the intersection of chemical biology, cancer research, and gene regulation. He highlights the opportunities AI offers for cancer research and the approaches being pursued at the AITHYRA Institute in this context. This also illustrates the contribution AI can make to the mission of “defeating cancer.”
Dr. Ronke Babajide, an IT expert with over 25 years of experience in the IT industry and currently Manager of Systems Engineering at the cybersecurity company Fortinet Austria, focuses on the societal dimension of AI. In her presentation, she discusses how AI can either exacerbate or reduce existing inequalities, the challenges that arise from this, and which principles are particularly important for the responsible development and use of AI.
The Mission Expert Talk thus offers expert insights into a highly topical field and combines technological potential with social responsibility.
