Internships for female students: comprehensive information for female students

Insight into research, technology and innovation (RTI)

Internships for female students enable active participation in engaging research projects. The focus is on transferring practical knowledge through qualified mentors. The internships are paid and can also be completed as part of a degree programme.

In six months, I gained real insight into the company, was able to familiarise myself with tasks and even take on my own projects.

FAQ

  • Internships advertised in the 2026 call for applications can take place between 9 March 2026 and 31 July 2027.
  • Please note: The internship can start at the earliest on the day on which the organisation where the internship will take place submits the funding application.

  • During the internship, you must be enrolled at an Austrian university or university of applied sciences in a natural science or technical field of study.
  • You must have completed at least one semester at a university or university of applied sciences before the start of the internship.
  • You may not take a leave of absence from your studies during the internship.
  • The internship can also be completed as part of a final thesis (e.g. diploma, master's, bachelor's).

  • Female students of natural sciences and technical subjects can complete an internship. These are basically
    • all fields of study at universities according to the Austrian system of scientific disciplines of Statistics Austria in the fields of natural sciences, technical sciences and agricultural sciences, veterinary medicine
    • all fields of study at universities of applied sciences that are classified as life sciences or technology according to the index in the current FH Guide. Please note that the classification is based on the FH Guide and not on the website.
    • All fields of study that are not included in the above-mentioned subjects and, according to the curriculum, teach natural sciences or technical content to a significant extent.
  • Tip: If you are unsure, please contact us to find out whether your field of study meets the criteria.

If you would like to complete several internships in one call for applications, you must do the internships at different organisations. Only one internship per call for applications is possible at the same company.

Employment with the same company must have ended at least six months before the start of the internship. Example: The internship begins on 17 August. This means that 16 February of the same year is the last day on which you may be employed by the submitting organisation.

The company or non-university research institution must ensure that the funding application is submitted no later than the day on which the internship begins.

If all criteria specified in the call for applications are met, the chances of receiving funding for an internship are very good. The organisation submitting the internship for funding is responsible for ensuring that the criteria are met. As demand for this funding is high and funds are limited, we recommend submitting your application as soon as possible. It is possible that the call for applications may be closed before the planned deadline due to funds being exhausted.

The gross monthly salary is at least €1,400. All other regular or irregular monetary benefits (e.g. special payments, profit sharing, commissions, bonuses, allowances) are not included in the gross monthly salary of €1,400. These must be paid by the organisation in addition, if required (e.g. according to the collective agreement). Normally, part of the tax payment can be reclaimed at the end of the year via the employee tax assessment (more detailed information is available on the website of the Federal Ministry of Finance).

The scope of employment must be at least 28.5 hours per week throughout the entire internship. The scope of employment may also be higher. With a flexitime arrangement, you can achieve even greater flexibility in working hours.

Non-Austrian students are eligible if they are enrolled in a science or technical degree programme at an Austrian university or university of applied sciences. Please check whether you are eligible for a work permit. Information on this can be found, for example, on the information pages of the OeAD.

Please note: You must work at least 28.5 hours per week.
