European Open Science Cloud (EOSC)

The European Open Science Cloud (EOSC) aims to provide European researchers with access to first-class computing, storage and analysis capacities located in Europe. This will also facilitate the open exchange of data, e.g. as part of the "Open Research Data Pilot".

European Cloud Initiative

The EU Commission describes its plans for establishing a European Open Science Cloud (EOSC) in its Communication "European Cloud Initiative – Building a competitive data and knowledge economy in Europe" dated 19 April 2016. The political aim is to give Europe a global lead in scientific data infrastructures in order to ensure that European scientists reap the full benefits of data-driven science.

The development of the EOSC is also promoted through Horizon 2020 projects in the field of "research infrastructures". The EOSC will also provide benefits to those researchers who make their data available for reuse as part of the Open Research Data Pilot.

The EOSC is designed to create an open and secure virtual environment in which scientific data can be stored, managed and analysed free of charge. In order to do this, existing infrastructures will be federated across borders and scientific disciplines and brought to a first-class standard. This requires high-performance computing capacities, high-speed broadband networks and leading-edge data and software services to be established and harmonised.

„European COVID-19 Data Platform“

This pilot of the EU Commission as part of the EOSC contains (research) data related to COVID-19 research and makes it publicly accessible. The aim is to collect knowledge and the state of the art related to COVID-19 from various sources and to make them available to the research community. This should facilitate the exchange of information and cooperation.
