Projektbeschreibung

Abstract

Thin-film Photovoltaics (PV) are a promising field due to their inherent advantages of low material and energy consumption in the production process. Furthermore, thin-film technologies pave the way to low cost production routes and novel PV applications. One well-recognized class of thin-film solar cells is based on quaternary compound semiconductors. The most prominent representatives of this group are CI(G)S solar cells (Copper Indium Gallium Selenide). CIGS solar cells excel in terms of efficiency and possess good long term stability. Since 2010 Sunplugged is developing its own proprietary CIGS thin-film solar cell and a novel printable and digitally controllable interconnection technology. In recent years Sunplugged has succeeded in the development of a CIGS photovoltaic solar cell based on a novel hybrid process with currently top efficiencies of 15,2% (on Glass in lab batch machine) and with efficiencies of more than 10% in Roll-to-Roll production on ultra-thin polymer foils. The company has also commissioned a Roll-to-Roll (R2R) test bed for the fabrication of 300 mm wide endless CIGS solar cells. Furthermore the development of the inkjet printable Monoscribe interconnection (TRL5) has been accomplished. This unique serial interconnection allows the adjustment of properties of a given PV module „on-the.fly“ and enables full freedom of module designs in respect to output voltage, geometries and sizes. Besides this unique selling preposition a set of robust materials and deposition processes are key issues for low production costs and future commercial exploitation. The Scale-up project addresses scientific and technological challenges deriving from the upscaling endeavours at Sunplugged. The objectives of the Scale-up Project are the development of: a stable and crack-free compound comprising a flexible substrate and the rear contact allowing upscaled CIGS solar cells with minimised efficiency losses on large scale formats. This compound will also act as a low cost source for the addition of alkali metals. In respect to the CIGS formation itself the project will tackle issues in respect to large-scale homogenities in Roll-to-Roll operation. This will be accompanied by the development of a novel set of characterization methods for the inspection of the endlessly produced CIGS solar cell and for the interconnected CIGS modules based on product concepts of a novel breed of mass customised PV modules for upcoming markets.
