Projektbeschreibung

Abstract

Sunlight, water, and carbon dioxide can be turned into methane, other alkanes or alcohols using photocatalysis. Such a CO2 neutral photosynthetic reaction has principally been shown, however the technical realization is hampered by absence of catalysts which are suitable, economic, and implementable on large technological scale. Three partners have teamed up in “Plas-Ion-PhotoKat”, who are world wide leaders in their respective disciplines: Research and development of organic solar systems (LIOS, JKU Linz), ionic liquids (proionic GmbH) and plasmonic nanostructures (IAP, JKU Linz). Together, they will investigate plasmonic/ionic co-catalysis of solar methane. This can not only be used as CO2 neutral fuel, but also (or may be even more important) as CO2 neutral feedstock for chemical industry or for carbon capture and storage (“negative CO2 balance”).
